Reps Gala Night: 50 Golden Years of Theatrical Brilliance

The celebrations aptly dubbed “50 Golden Years” marked 5 decades of theatrical brilliance for Reps Theatre on Wednesday 13 January 2010

Reps put together a fantastic display of musicals and plays that left the well turned out audience in awe.

Speaking at the glamorous event, Reps Theatre Chairman Teri Grimmel said “today we pay tribute the huge number of people who have made Reps what it is and who have entertained us over the past 50 years in this wonderful theatre”.


The production 50 Golden Years was written by, Dawn Parkinson and directed by Sue Bolt with Meg Mackenzie as musical director.

Guest of Honour His Worship Mayor of Harare Mr. Muchadeyi Masunda provided words of support and encouragement to the hardworking Reps team.

Reps Theatre was ceremonially launched with a gala performance of the Peter Ustinov play Romanoff and Juliet on January 13 1960 and it  has been a Southern African theatrical and since then entertainment hub.
In 50 year s it has showcased Over 400 in house productions have on its stage.  In recent years, the society has struggled with the declining economy but has battled on as proven on the Gala Night. 
The theatre aside from staging productions has various in house programmes available at a
 a nominal fee.

Reps offer theatrical art classes and exposure at various levels. The theatre was created by the Repertory Players who have been in existence since 1931 just under 80 years. They have managed to stage over 659 of their own productions.
With the objective of training young people in the Art of Theatre Repteens is open to the youth aged between 13 and 19 years.

This platform offers teen training and members are often recruited to perform in Reps' major productions. The company will occasionally put on its own productions former members have pursued successful careers in theatres around the world.

Preps is a theatrical training group for youngsters  aged seven to twelve, learning the basics of acting and stage work to get them interested in extending and exposing their talents in acting and other areas. The group meets on Saturday mornings during school terms.

Reprobates is an informal training group for adults who may or may not have been involved in the theatre before and who have talents  in areas such as acting singing dancing or backstage work. Meetings are on Thursdays evenings.

With the successful launch and celebration of 50 years of Theatre at the Gala night 2010 will be an exciting year for the theatre that has survived over 50 years in the business and continues to grow stronger and stronger yearly.

The Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust would like to congratulate the Theatre on 5 decades of spearheading theatre in Zimbabwe and building an accessible platform for the arts in Zimbabwe.
