Smooth Succession of Culture Fund Board of Trustees Achieved

"The life of the arts far from being an interruption, a distraction, in the life of a nation,
is close to the center of a nation's purpose-and is a test of the quality of a nation's civilization."
 -  John F. Kennedy

The Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust values transparent governance systems and processes as a key component in the building of sustainable institutions in Africa. The Fund was recognised by the Zimbabwe Institute of Management for making significant contribution to the development of the Arts and Culture in the country. Its Executive Director, Farai Mpfunya, received the Manager of the Year Award – National Contribution for helping the organisation achieve its governance goals.

One of the key areas of governance is board succession in line with its own deed of trust. In July 2010, the Fund officially appointed new Trustees to its Board.  This followed the honourable retirement of 4 members after serving four years mandated by deed of trust. The former Board Chairman, business executive, Luxon Zembe, was replaced by George Mutendadzamera, Corporate Affairs General Manager of Delta Beverages. Luxon Zembe has moved on to other Board roles including Chairmanship of one of the country’s leading financial services company.

The other trustees who retired following the end of their mandated terms are highly regarded business executives and academics; Busisiwe Bango, Farai Mpofu and Professor Zifikile Gambahaya. These three have been replaced by businessman and former Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) president, Callisto Jokonya, financial service consultant, Maitirwa Mukonoweshuro and Sithokozile Ndlovu, the Sales and Marketing Director of Kango (Tregers Group).

Trustees who still have another two-year term of service include, Malawi intellectual property and arts consultant,  Serman Chavula, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) Director, Elvas Mari, Marketing Expert and Director of the Zambezi Water Project, Sarah Ndlovu and Farai Mpfunya, the Culture Fund Executive Director.

At a time when Zimbabwe’s corporate sector is in the process of crafting the National Code on Corporate Governance, the Culture Fund and all its stakeholders have expressed gratitude bestowed on the institutional memory of the Fund’s governance by the retired Trustees.  They diligently served the sector and the country and have contributed to an efficient, transparent and professional model of funding Arts and Culture in Africa.
